Carbon-ceramic brake discs are braking components made from carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide matrix composites, also known as carbon fiber-ceramic composite brake discs. Their matrix is composed primarily of silicon carbide, silicon, and graphite, representing a novel composite material that combines the high mechanical strength of carbon fiber with the wear and oxidation resistance of ceramic materials.
Carbon-ceramic brake discs offer advantages such as low density, high-temperature resistance, and stable, high-performance friction characteristics. They are less dense than traditional cast-iron brake discs-weighing only about one-third to one-half as much as cast-iron discs of the same size-and demonstrate significant superiority in terms of weight reduction, high-temperature tolerance, shorter braking distances, and extended service life. They maintain a stable friction coefficient of 0.35 to 0.4. Additionally, they generate fewer particulate emissions during braking, making them a low-emission option.
