Brake discs are categorized into solid discs (single-piece) and vented discs (dual-piece). Solid discs are straightforward-simply put, they are solid metal. Vented discs, as the name implies, are designed for airflow; visually, they feature channels or "vents" running from the outer edge toward the center. As the vehicle moves, air circulates through these vents to dissipate heat, offering significantly better cooling performance than solid discs. Since most passenger cars are front-wheel drive, the front brakes experience more frequent use and wear; consequently, manufacturers typically equip the front with vented discs and the rear with solid discs.

Drilled and slotted brake discs-often referred to as "high-speed" or "performance" discs-are typically found on high-performance vehicles such as race cars, sports cars, and sporty models. With the rise of the automotive modification trend in China, many enthusiasts are sourcing these discs through various channels and installing them themselves. However, drilled and slotted discs are a double-edged sword; while they offer specific advantages, they also come with downsides, such as increased brake pad wear and higher requirements regarding material quality and manufacturing precision. Many small companies produce high-quality replicas while masquerading as brands from Europe, Japan, or Taiwan, so DIY enthusiasts need to exercise caution.

The brake disc is a critical component of the braking system; a high-quality disc ensures stable braking without noise or vibration. DIY enthusiasts without adequate professional knowledge should avoid attempting to replace brake discs themselves, as OEM discs have undergone rigorous testing by professional engineers and are fully capable of handling the vehicle's braking forces. Furthermore, installing drilled and slotted discs does not always guarantee better braking performance than standard discs. Therefore, when modifying components that are vital to safety, car enthusiasts should proceed with caution.
